Syosset, NY: The Long Island Generations Bowling Tour (LIGBT) continued its amazing growth with an event at AMF Garden City. A total of 140 bowlers, largest ever for the LIGBT, competed for over $10,000 in prizes. The winner of the scratch event was Brian Soto of Kew Gardens, earning $1,250 and the 205 & under champion was Antoinette Licata of Elmont winning $500. With Brian winning, it broke the streak of senior champions that had previously won the past two LIGBT events.
Brian bowled great all day, averaging 219 which positioned him 3rd in qualifying and earned him a bye in the finals. Top qualifier and earning two byes was John Conroy of Mahopac, who averaged 228 and finished runner up to Brian. John earned $700 for his second place finish. The top senior qualifiers were Joe Congliaro of Valley Stream (2 byes) who lead with a 1096 series and Adam Frank, a super senior, who received 1 bye in the finals with a 1056 qualifying series. The highest women qualifier was Amanda Fagan of Patchogue who advanced to the finals with a 985 series.
Brian’s road to the title started in round 2 of the finals where he defeated senior bowler Mark Fordin of Oceanside, 206-181. In round 3 Brian continued his winning ways by beating Nick Lalner of Elmont, 203-158. In the semi-finals Brian was lucky to advance as Patrick Sullivan Jr., who traveled from Darien, CT, opened in the 10th frame to lose to Brian 225-223. Patrick earned $400 but the long drive home had to be tough.
In the championship match Brian met the top qualifier John Conroy and they both started out with 5 strikes. But Brian continued his string as John made a couple of spares and at the end Brian defeated John 259-233. Considering the scores were fairly low all day (it only took a 209 average to make the cut in the under division and 206 in the senior division) the final match was well bowled by both players. Total prize fund paid out in the finals was $6,150, with LIGBT adding $500 due to the great turnout and to show its appreciation to the bowlers.
In the 205 & under tournament history was made as the final shootout consisted of 3 women. In the final shootout Antoineete Licata just got by qualifying leader Donna Bertuglia of Dix Hills, by 6 pins shooting 232 to Donna’s 226 (includes handicap.) Antoinette earned $500 and a beautiful trophy for her win while Donna took home $300 for her fine second place finish. Finishing third in the shootout was Jennifer Christopher of Kings Park who rolled a 183 and earned $200.
The 205 & under event attracted 60 entries with a total of 15 players advancing to the finals. Scoring for the day was challenging but playable as Donna Bertuglia lead with a fine 681 series. To advance to the finals it took at 606 series with handicap and bonus pins. Total payout in the finals was $2,150.
The next LIGBT event will be held at AMF Sheridan on Sunday, March 22nd. Due to limited lanes and time this event will run with a new format. All guarantees will still be paid and the 1 in 4 cashing ratio will also be in effect. Details of the Sheridan event will be announced shortly on www.ligbtour.com For additional LIGBT information please visit www.ligbtour.com or call our tournament hotline; 1.877.900.6464.
