Babylon, NY: Bill Verni, W. Babylon, NY, won the LIGBT Memorial Day Madness Tournament at AMF Babylon. This was Bill’s first LIGBT title and it was a major one- worth $3,000! Bill won the title with a 278 handicap game (223 scratch) which was 19 pins more than second place finisher Amanda Beck, the scratch champion, who finished with a 259 and won $1,500.

The final shootout consisted of 5 bowlers; 4 handicap and one scratch. Amanda, the scratch champion, had a tough challenge as she was spotting as many as 63 pins. Bill, who has only been bowling for 3 years, drilled a new Brunswick Nexus for the tournament and it proved to be a good choice.

Amanda made up most of the disadvantage by starting the game with 6 straight strikes. Bill had two triples in between an open to start his game. Even though Amanda tripled in the tenth all Bill had to do was throw a few pins in his last frame to secure the title. Finishing third with a 245 handicap game was Fred Jankowsky Brooklyn, NY earning $1,000. Fourth went to Chris DiDamo, Glenwood Landing, NY with a 217 worth $750. Rounding out the top 5 was Darryl Freeman, New York, NY who shot a 207 earning him $500.

For the Memorial Day Madness event Kegel’s Broadway pattern was used. Scoring was a bit on the high side as this pattern proved playable if you lined up correctly and had the right equipment. Cut scores for the weekend ranged from 690-721.

The LIGBT Memorial Day Madness was a 3-day tournament featuring 6 squads plus a Desperado Shootout. A total of 443 entries were recorded and 86 bowlers cashed in the $20,000+ prize fund. In addition to the prize fund 4 Mini-Eliminator Marathon packages were given away: Alex Cavagnaro, Chris DiDamo, Maniram Basdeo, and Joe Scianna.

The next regular LIGBT event is Sunday, June 10th at AMF Syosset. Top prizes are guaranteed at $1,000-1st and $500-2nd. The LIGBT will be starting its Friday night Summer Tour on June 1st at AMF Babylon (8pm). Both scratch and handicap bowlers are welcomed as well as youth competitors.
