MATT O’GRADY $3,000 SANDY CATALANO OPEN CHAMPION

Babylon, NY: Matt O’Grady, Perth Amboy, NY emerged victorious at the 3rd annual Sandy Catalano Open held at AMF Babylon. The three day scratch and handicap event drew a record crowd of 435 entries which generated a prize fund exceeding $19,000. This event, which supports the Sandy Catalano scholarship fund, is held annually to remember Sandy Catalano, a great bowler and supporter of junior bowling.

The final shootout was not decided until the last shot of the tournament. Matt, who advanced to the shootout as the scratch champion, needed a double in the tenth to shutout his closest opponent Hee Jin Jun, Whitestone, NY the handicap champion. Matt did not throw a strike in the tenth which meant Hee Jin just had to mark to secure the title. Unfortunately, she chopped the 6-10 giving Matt the title.

Matt won $3,000 and a beautiful trophy with a 225 scratch game. Hee Jin took home $1,500 for second place with a 221 handicap game. Finish third was Gordon Tunison, New York, NY who shot a 216 handicap game and earned $1,000. Ray Catalano, Manorville, NY earned $500 as the highest finishing senior.

The Sandy Catalano Open was a three day event with 6 separate qualifying squads. 1 in 6 bowlers advanced each squad in both the scratch and handicap events. Kegel’s Broadway 37 foot pattern was used which produced moderate scoring. A total of 77 bowlers advanced to the finals, each earning a minimum of $100.

The Sandy Catalano Open was sponsored by CLS Custom Upholsterers, AMF Babylon, ESP Metal Crafts, D.B.L. Associates, and the LIGBT. Each spring the Sandy Catalano Scholarship Fund donates a scholarship to a male and female high school bowler from Long Island. The Catalano Family’s goal is to continue to offer bowlers a quality bowling event annually to honor Sandy’s life and love for bowling.

The LIGBT, which operates the Sandy Catalano Open, will be hosting its next event at AMF Syosset on Sunday, March 18th with two squads; 1pm & 3pm. Cynthia Cooke Wins Her First LIGBT Title

South Levittown, NY: The LIGBT visited South Levittown and a great crowd of 121 entries packed the center on a beautiful Sunday. Emerging victorious for the first time was Cynthia Cooke of Patchogue, NY. Cynthia won the $600 top prize by shooting a 252 handicap game in the final shootout against 3 other competitors. 

The final shootout consisted of four bowlers that had never won an LIGBT title. Despite some obvious nerves in the early stages some great bowling took place with Cynthia taking control early. Cynthia, who was getting the most handicap, bowled the highest scratch game in the finals with a 177. Finishing second and earning $300 with a 228 handicap game, was Fred Jankowsky, Brooklyn, NY. Third place was taken by Derek Brandi, Whitestone, NY who just missed finishing second by 1 pin. Derek earned $250 with a 227. Fourth place went to the 1pm squad leader, Darryl Freeman of New York City who shot a 175 and earned $225. 

There were a total of 27 finalists all who earned a minimum of $100 and shared in a $4,400 prize fund. Top series of the day was rolled by Darryl Freeman with an 813. It took a 697 series to make the cut in the 1pm squad and a 713 in the second squad. The wildcard winner, which is the highest 6 game series by a non-finalist, was earned by Donald Eubanks with a 1389 handicap series.

The next LIGBT event is will be our largest event of the year; the 3rd annual Sandy Catalano Open at AMF Babylon. This will be a 3-day tournament with both scratch and handicap qualifying; Friday, March 2nd through Sunday, March 4th. Top prizes are guaranteed at $3,000-1st/$1,500-2nd/$1,000-3rd. KAREEM ATKINS WIN HIS FIRST LIGBT TITLE

East Meadow, NY: The LIGBT visited AMF East Meadow for a regular 2 squad tournament and a great crowd of 117 entries packed the bowling center. Kareem Atkins, Bronx, NY earned his first LIGBT trophy, and the $600 top prize, by defeating three other opponents in the final shootout. Kareem shot a 266 handicap game (190 scratch) to defeat second place finisher Drew Dioguardi, Bellmore, NY who shot a 256 handicap game (199 scratch) and earned $400.

The final shootout was undecided until the 10th frame. Drew, who was the 1pm squad leader with an incredible 833 handicap series, needed a mark in the tenth to secure his first title. But he missed a spare and Kareem won the title sitting on the bench. Finishing third was So Young Chin, the only previous champion in the final shootout, with a 230 which earned her $300 and fourth went to Eric Vecchi, Islip Terrace who earned $250 with a 220.

The East Meadow finals paid out $4,190 to 24 finalists. Scoring for the day was relatively high as it took 729 to make the finals in the second squad and 765 in the first squad. Kegel’s Beaten Path pattern was used. The LIGBT welcomed 12 new members at the tournament.

The next LIGBT event is Sunday, February 26th at South Levittown Lanes. Squad times are 1pm and 3pm and walk-in entries are welcomed. The following week is our richest event of the year “The 3rd annual Sandy Catalano Scholarship Tournament” which will feature a $3,000 guaranteed top prize and will be held at AMF Babylon March 3 & 4. Tony Chin Wins Big Event

Plainview, NY: For the first time in LIGBT history a bowler that was added to the finals because they were the highest 6-game bowler not to make the finals in either squad won the tournament. Tony Chin, Flushing, NY failed to make the finals in either squad but had the highest 6-game total by a non-finalist so he was added to the finals. He took full advantage of this bonus and went through 4 final rounds to win the $750 top prize. This was Tony’s second LIGBT title.

A record crowd of 146 bowlers crowded AMF Plainview to compete for over $5,000 in prize money. A total of 30 bowlers advanced to the finals which took 3 rounds to get to the final shootout. In the final shootout the scores were high as Tony Chin took the title, and the $750 top prize with a 289 handicap game. Finishing second was David Henderson, W. New York, NY who earned $400 with a 273 handicap game. Third place went to Joette Healey, Yonkers, NY who rolled a 260 handicap game to earn $300. Finishing fourth, and taking home $225 was Gary Schaffer, Lindenhurst, NY with a 257.

ROBERT LOVAGLIO WINS HIS FIRST LIGBT TITLE

South Levittown, NY: The LIGBT visited South Levittown for a special added event that featured an $800 top prize. A total of 98 entries bowled and when the tournament was over Robert Lovaglio, Seaford, NY was holding his first LIGBT trophy and the $800 top prize. Finishing second was Scott Gray, East Meadow, NY who earned $400 and third went to Steven Williams, Bellrose, NY who took home $300. All three shootout finalists were looking for their first LIGBT title. 
Robert qualified for the finals with a 791 series. Although the scoring was very high all day the final shootout had a lot of open frames. But in the end Robert came through with a double in tenth to grab his first LIGBT title by 9 pins over second place finisher Scott Gray. The final shootout handicap scores were Robert; 248, Scott 239, and Steve 194. 
The next LIGBT event is will be at AMF Plainview on Sunday, January 29th. Top prizes are guaranteed to pay $500 & $250. There will be two squads at Plainview: 1pm & 3pm and walk-ins are welcomed. MANIRAM BASDEO WINS BAY SHORE TITLE

Bay Shore, NY: The LIGBT visited AMF Bay Shore for the first time and the event was a great success. A total of 98 entries bowled and when the tournament was over Maniram Basdeo, Bronx, NY was holding his first LIGBT trophy and the $500 top prize. Finishing second was Jose Ferreira, Woodside, NY who earned $300 and third went to William Knoth, Patchogue, NY who took home $250.

Maniram’s road to his first LIGBT title started in the 1pm squad where he was squad leader with a 765 series. The top series seeded him directly into the final shootout where he only had to bowl 1 game to win the title. The final match was a good one as Jose could have won the title with a mark in the 10th frame but he opened, and Maniram spared, giving him the title. The final shootout handicap scores were Maniram; 240, Jose 230, and William 199.

A total of 22 bowlers advanced to the finals which paid a solid prize fund totaling $3,540. Cut scores were fairly low all day as the PBA Chameleon pattern created a very tough scoring environment. Ed Eng, Whitestone, NY was the highest 6-game non-qualifier (1365) which gave him the wildcard spot in the finals.

The next LIGBT event is a special $50 entry fee tournament at South Levittown Lanes on Sunday, January 15th. Top prizes are guaranteed to pay $800 & $400 and every round you advance in the finals you double your winnings.  The South Levittown event will feature two squads (1pm & 3pm) and walk-ins are welcomed.
