East Islip, NY: The Long Island Generations Bowling Tour (LIGBT) traveled to East Islip Lanes for its 8th event of the year. A total of 110 bowlers competed for over $8,000 in prizes. The winner of the scratch event was senior bowler Bob Shongood of Holtsville, NY earning $1,000 and the 205 & under champion was Candice Purcell of Westport, CT winning $500.

The scratch event finals were well represented by East Islip house bowlers. In fact, 5 of the 8 finalists bowl in the host center. This is quite impressive considering the LIGBT attracts bowlers from the tri-state area and the house shot was not used for the tournament. With several other major scratch events running at the same time it was a perfect opportunity to see new faces in the finals.

Bob’s road to his first LIGBT title started with a senior division leading 1133 (226 average) 5-game block. As the high senior bowler Bob was guaranteed in the final shootout and no less than third place. The high 49 & under bowler was Don Hicks of W. Babylon, NY who lead with a tournament high 1236 series (247 average). The third finalist in the shootout was Paul Link of Fern Glen, PA who advanced through 2 rounds of the finals.

The Shootout had a great ending as Bob needed a strike to win the tournament. Bob’s $1,000 payday came true when a tripped 4-7 strike earned him the title with his 237 game. Paul forced Bob to finish strong by throwing 5 consecutive strikes in the final 3 frames for a 236. Paul earned $500 for his runner-up finish while Don took home $300 for his days work. Bob dedicated his victory to two friends and fellow league bowlers who recently passed away, Jack Kasin and Sandy Catalano.

The 205 and under tournament attracted an LIGBT record entry count of 67 bowlers. The 3 game qualifying leader, who also our champion, Candice Purcell earned a bye into the championship shootout with a720 series. The second place qualifier, Alisa Cioffi (670), earned 1 bye in the finals. A total of 11 bowlers advanced to the finals while six more cashed.

The Championship Shootout was an exciting battle among 3 bowlers. To earn her first LIGBT title Candice ($500) struck out from the 8th frame on to shoot a 226 and lock out the 2nd place finisher, Alisa Cioffi (212) who earned $300. The third place finisher was Shawn Bruton (Patchogue, NY) who earned $250 with a 163 game.

The LIGBT’s next stop is on Sunday, May 17th at AMF East Meadow. The LIGBT is finishing up its first season and now has over 400 paid members.
