MIKE MULLIN & VINCE BALISKY WIN RECORD LIGBT EVENT

Posted On: February 21, 2010

Mike Mullin - Scratch Champion

February 21, 2010

Garden City, NY:  The LIGBT, sponsored by Columbia 300, crowned two new champions while breaking a one-day entry record for the club at AMF Garden City. A total of 174 bowlers competed and when the day was done Mike Mullin of Congers, NY earned $1,000 and his first LIGBT scratch title. The handicap title, with its $650 top prize, went to Vincent Baliski of Elmhurst, NY.

For the Garden City event the PBA Cheetah Pattern was put down and the scoring was playable but on the low side. It only took a 209 average in the 49 & under scratch division to advance while a 191 average in the senior division got you into the finals. The pattern definitely favored the left side but the right side was still competitive.

Mike Mullin’s title had to wait until the last ball of the tournament. Joey Serrapico, Lindenhurst, NY was the qualifying leader with a 953 four game series and was seeded into the final shootout. Joey needed all 3 strikes in the tenth frame to tie Mike and force a rolloff but a stubborn 7 pin, on what looked to be a perfect shot, gave Mike the title and Joey a second place finish ($750.) The final score in the shootout was Mike Mullin- 217, Joey Serripico- 216, and finishing third was the high senior bowler Tim Regan of E. Northport, NY who shot a 199 and earned $500.

The 210 and under handicap event had an incredible turnout of 101 bowlers which meant 25 would advance to the finals. Vince Baliski got to the winner’s circle in style by shooting a 294 game (267 scratch!) Vince’s day almost ended in the first round of the finals as he just squeaked in with a 198 which was the cut score. Finishing second was LIGBT loyalist Damon Gizzi of St. James, NY who earned $350 with a 236, 58 pins behind the champion. Rounding out the four man shootout was third place finisher Joe Hoenig of East Meadow 198 ($300) and Alex Padmore of Jamaica, NY who earned $250 with a 181 game.

The LIGBT has three events scheduled in March; AMF Babylon on Sunday, March 7th (noon), Cozy Bowl (Queens) on Sunday, March 14th (2pm) and AMF Sayville on Sunday, March 21st (2pm). Anthony Pepe and Luis Gomez LIGBT Champions

East Meadow Champion: Anthony Pepe

January 31, 2010

Syosset, NY:  The LIGBT, sponsored by Columbia 300, had another big event at AMF East Meadow. Close to 120 bowlers packed the center which featured some of the highest scoring in LIGBT history. Standing with the champion’s trophy at the end of the day was scratch winner Anthony Pepe ($1,000) and handicap winner Luis Gomez ($500).

The scoring at AMF East Meadow was outstanding and a surprised to all. Anthony Pepe, from Queens, NY, has been a dominant figure in the LIGBT but had never won a title. That is now history as Anthony took home the $1,000 top prize with a wonderful 258 game in the finals. The final shootout had 2 lefties and 2 righties. The top righty, and second place finisher was senior bowler Joe Conigliaro of Valley Stream, NY who came up 1 pin short with his 257 game. Joe earned $600 for second place.

Other top finishers were David Parker of Brooklyn, who finished third and earned $400 and Tom Zientarski, of Rockville Center, NY who earned $250 for his 4th place finish. Tom, was the qualifying leader by averaging 255 for the day. A total of 11 bowlers advanced to the finals. The total payout for the scratch competition exceeded $5,000.

The 210 and under handicap event had a huge turnout as 72 bowlers jammed the lanes looking to take home the $500 top prize and champion’s trophy. Luis Gomez, Corona, NY outlasted everyone to earn the title. Luis finished third in qualifying but barely made it through the first round of the finals. He shot a 235 to advance which was the cut score.

Luis had to defeat two great competitors in the final shootout. Finishing second was Mack Oakman Jr. of Wheatley Heights, NY who shot a 237 and earned $350. The third place finisher, with a 218 game, was Alex Padmore of Jamaica, NY who earned $250. A total of 18 bowlers advanced to the finals and enjoyed a $2,800 prize fund.

Cozy Lanes owner Diane with Scratch Champion Adam Chase

January 24, 2010

Syosset, NY:  The LIGBT, sponsored by Columbia 300, hosted its first event in Queens at Cozy Bowl and it was a roaring success. 107 bowlers, including 38 new members, packed the upstairs 32 lanes. The winner of the scratch tournament, winning his third LIGBT event was 21-year old Adam Chase of Seaford, NY. The 210 & under handicap champion was Stephen Friedella of West Orange, NJ who earned $500 and the champions trophy.

Adam Chase has done extremely well at LIGBT events with 3 wins and 1 second place finish. His streak of making the finals was almost broken as his 822 series was the cut score to advance. But in the finals Adam bowled his best games leading every round he bowled. In the final shootout Adam dominated with a 255 while his nearest opponent, John Conroy of Mahopac, was 42 pins away. Adam earned $1,000 while John (213) took home $500 for second. The top senior bowler, James D’Elia of Glendale, NY finished third with a a 205 and earned $300.

The 210 and under handicap event was packed with 66 bowlers all looking to take home the $500 top prize and champion’s trophy. After qualifying was completed, everyone who shot a 629 series or higher, including handicap/bonus pins, advanced to the finals. Preston Cheeks, a former LIGBT Champion, from Brooklyn, NY, was the qualifying leader with a 686 and automatically seeded into the final shootout.

Steve Friedella, our latest champion, just made it to the finals by advancing with a 630 series, just one pin over the cut score. Steve had to bowl in 4 rounds of the finals to win the title. In the final shootout Steve shot his best game with a 246 (201 scratch) defeating his nearest opponent by 50 pins! Finishing second was Damon Gizzi of St. James, a great LIGBT supporter, who rolled a 196 and earned $350. Preston Cheeks was the third place finisher and earned $250 with a 180 game.

The next LIGBT event will be at AMF East Meadow on Sunday, January 31st at 1pm. For more information on the LIGBT, and complete results of the Cozy event, please visit our website at www.ligbtour.com or call the tournament office at 1.877.900.6464.

Norm Ginsberg Beats Record Field..

January 10, 2010

Syosset, NY:  The LIGBT, sponsored by Columbia 300, hosted its first event of 2010 and had a record crowd of 137 entries. Norm Ginsberg, East Meadow, NY won his first scratch LIGBT title bowling in his first LIGBT tournament. Norm earned $1,000 for his title. The 210 & under handicap winner was also a first time LIGBT Champion as Beverley Parker, New York City,  won her first title and the $500 top prize.
Norm Ginsberg bowled well all day on a very demanding condition. His 878 four-game series was the second highest qualifying series of the day. The squad leader was last month’s champion, Adam Chase of Seaford, NY, who rolled a 938 series and earned $700 for his second place finish. Norm also bowled well in the finals rolling games of 235, 227, and 218.

The Championship Shootout was a very close match for the first 5 frames as all three competitors were within 3 pins. The senior champion, Jim Hosier of Wayne, NY had a chance to win the event but splits in the 8th and 10th frame caused him to finish with a 185 game which earn him a third place finish and $400. Adam Chase, threw the ball well, but a couple of 10 pins sealed his second place fate. Norm stayed cleaned his last few frames which allowed him to capture the title.

The 210 and under handicap event was packed with 67 eager bowlers all looking to take home the champion’s trophy. After the 3 games of qualifying anyone who shot a 635 series, with handicap and bonus pins, advanced to the finals and cashed for a minimum of $100. Michelle Grexer of Douglaston, NY was the qualifying leader with a 680 and was automatically seeded into the final shootout.

Beverley’s path to the victory circle almost came to an end early in the finals as she was the cut score with a 197. But the close call didn’t upset her determination as she rolled a 227 and 215 games in her other final matches. In the final shootout Beverley needed a mark in the 10th frame to seal her victory. Finishing second with a 196 was Rich Walker, Brooklyn, NY who earned $350. Posted On: November 30, 2009

Scratch Champion, Brian Ziesig

November 29, 2009

Babylon, NY: LIGBT hosted its first weekend major event over Thanksgiving at AMF Babylon. Over 350 entries competed for $21,000 in prize money. The scratch title went to Brian Ziesig of Levittown who earned $3,000 for his first LIGBT victory. The 210 and under handicap champion was Mack Oakman of Wheatly Heights who won $1,500 for his first LIGBT title.

The LIGBT Major consisted of 5 qualifying squads all leading to an elimination finals. The scratch and handicap events had 22 finalists each. All finalists were guaranteed to earn double their entry and all squad leaders were given 1 bye in the finals.

Brian’s road to his title started in Round 2 of the finals as he earned 1 bye for leading the Sunday noon squad with a 749. Brian made an early statement in the finals by shooting a 240 in Round 2 and came back with a 223 in Round 3. But Brian saved his finest performance for the Shootout Round where he started with 6 consecutive strikes and finished with a 257 game.

The Championship Shootout featured some great bowling under a lot of pressure. Finishing second was Steve Chiarella of Staten Island who rolled a 240 and earned $1,500. The third place finisher was our top senior bowler, Jim Hosier of New Jersey who rolled a 223 game and earned $1,000. Finishing up the final four was John Conroy of Mahopac who earned $700 for his 207 game. The only 300 of the tournament was shot by Anthony Pepe of Queens who rolled his perfect game in the Sunday 2pm squad.

The 210 and under handicap event continued its amazing growth as 185 entries were recorded which created a prize fund exceeding $7,800. Mack Oakman, a great LIGBT supporter who rarely misses an event, finally got to stand in the winner’s circle at LIGBT’s biggest tournament as of yet. Mack rolled a fine 233 game with handicap, getting a spare and eight in the tenth frame, to lock out his closest competitor Dave Soren of Long Beach who rolled a 219 with handicap. Dave, who shot the highest qualifying series of the tournament (798 with handicap and bonus pins), earned $750 for his fine second place finish.

Rounding out the 210 and under shootout was Ed Dougherty of Patchogue who earned $400 with a 210 game and Scott Shultz of Orlando, FL who earned $300 for his 189 game. A total of 46 bowlers cashed in the handicap event.

The next LIGBT event, Sunday, December 13th at AMF Garden City, is the Tour’s annual holiday tournament which is being sponsored by CLS Custom Upholsterers. All entrants will receive a holiday gift for participating in the event. The scratch tournament will feature 5 games of qualifying with 1 in 4 advancing to the finals. Chris Ziesig Wins N. Levittown Scratch Title

Posted On: November 09, 2009

George Mottern, Brian Soto, John Conroy,Chris Ziesig and JoAnn, Mgr N.Levittown Lanes

November 8, 2009

N. Levittown, NY: The LIGBT hosted its second event of its second season and crowned two new champions; Chris Ziesig of Hicksville, NY won the scratch title and $1,000 while Robert Bader of Holtsville, NY won the 210 & under handicap title and $500. A total of 99 bowlers competed for more than $8,000 in prize money.

It was pretty evident early on that Chris Ziesig was going to have a good day. Chris started with a 279 first game and never looked back. He was the 49 & under squad leader which seeded Chris directly into the Championship Shootout. In his only game in the finals Chris rolled a 257 and beat out the Senior Champion, George Mottern ($600) of Riverhead by 3 pins. Chris doubled in the tenth frame to force George to do the same but a split on his second ball gave Chris the title.

The Championship Shootout was filled with great shot making and high scores. Three out of the four bowlers in the shootout had a chance to win the title going into the later frames. Finishing third was Brian Soto of Kew Gardens who rolled a 247 game which earned him $400. Rounding out the shootout and finishing fourth was John Conroy of Mahopac who stumbled with a 187 earning him $300.

The 210 and under final shootout was fun to watch with an unlikely outcome. Two of the finalists were former LIGBT Champions (Preston Cheeks and Cary Fishman) going against Robert Bader who had yet to win an LIGBT event. That didn’t seem to bother Robert as he crushed the two former champions by over 30 pins, with a 238 game, to take the title and the championship trophy.  Preston Cheeks (207) of Brooklyn earned $300 for his second place finish and Cary Fishman of Manhattan (203) earn $200 for third place.

The next LIGBT event is the Tour’s first “Major” which will be held at AMF Babylon over Thanksgiving Weekend. Top prizes are guaranteed at $3,000 for the scratch event and $1,500 for the handicap tournament. There will be 5 qualifying squads to choose from and multiple cashing is allowed. As always, 1 in 4 bowlers per squad will cash in both events. For more information on the LIGBT, and complete results of the North Levittown event, please visit our website at www.ligbtour.com or call the tournament office at 1.877.900.6464.
