STEVEN KELLY WINS FIRST LIGBT TITLE

Wantagh, NY:  Steven Kelly, a 31 year old right hander from Islip, NY won his first LIGBT title by defeating James Marino, Lindenhurst, NY 251-245 at AMF Wantagh. Steve, who has been a member since 2009, earned $1,000 for his victory while James, who finished second for the 3rd time, earned $500. Rounding out the top 4 was third place finisher Julio Arnold, Woodside, NY with a 231 worth $300 and fourth went to senior bowler Jose Ferreira, also from Woodside, NY with a 226 worth $250.

The final shootout was a tight match until the end. Julio, who was giving everyone at least 18 pins in handicap, started out strong with two doubles in the first six frames. But he missed single pin spares in the 7th and 9th frames ruining his title hopes. James had an early triple but he opened in the last 3 out of 4 frames to finish second. Steve won the title with consistency as he had an early open but marked in every frame the rest of the way to secure his first victory.

The AMF Wantagh tournament drew a nice crowd of 124 entries, advanced 33 bowlers to the finals (better than 1 in 4), and paid out $5,760. The tournament pattern was “Middle Road” (39 feet) resulting in moderate cut scores: 723 at 1pm and 715 at 3:30pm. High series of the tournament was shot by Steve Baum with an 816 in the 3:30pm squad. The wildcard winner was Donald Eubanks with a 1406. The high handicap series without bonus pins pot winner was Sal Florinda with a 706 in the first squad. Rich Patson won the no-tap jackpot for $310 in the first squad.

LIGBT’s next tournament is our annual Super Bowl Marathon. This 5-game scratch and handicap tournament features a 1 in 4 prize list and will be held at AMF Plainview on Sunday, February 5th at NOON. JUSTIN KAMPF WINS LIGBT LEVITTOWN HOUSE SHOT EVENT

Levittown, NY:  Justin Kampf loves home cooking! Justin, who runs the pro shop at Levittown Lanes, won the LIGBT house shot event at Levittown Lanes on Sunday. Justin defeated Mike Cangelosi, Middle Village, NY 252-240 to earn the $1,000 top prize. While Mike earned $600 for second, left hander Jason Nicholas, Wantagh, NY finished third with a 210 worth $400. Rounding out the top 4 was senior Gary Paulsen, Massapequa, NY with a 207 worth $300.

The final shootout was an up and down match. Gary, who was getting the most handicap, was the early leader but splits in the middle of the game ruined his championship dreams. Jason could never put together a string of strikes which ended his trophy quest. Mike and Justin were tied in the 6th frame but when Mike opened and Justin through 4 strikes in a row, the match was over and Justin captured his third LIGBT title in the past 6 months.

The Levittown Lanes tournament drew a great crow of 122 entries, advanced 21 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $4,700. The tournament pattern was a modified house shot (44 feet) resulting in cut scores of: 778 at 1pm and 766 at 3:30pm. High series of the tournament was shot by Andrew Mienkiewicz, Massapequa, NY with an 871 in the first squad. The wildcard winner was John Rizzi, Bay Shore, NY with a 1482. Perfect 300 games were shot by Jason Nicholas in the second squad and Justin Kampf in the finals.

LIGBT’s next tournament is a special event at AMF Wantagh on Sunday, January 29th. One in 4 bowlers each squad will advance to the finals and shoot for the $1,000 guaranteed top prize. SAL FLORINDO WINS LIGBT TITLE AT AMF E. MEADOW

E. Meadow, NY:  Sal Florindo, a 76 year old retired right hander from Forest Hills, NY won his second LIGBT title at AMF E. Meadow. Sal defeated Jose Roman, Bethpage, NY 243-234 to win the $1,000 top prize. While Jose won $500 for second, Andrew Mienkiewicz, Massapequa, NY finished third with a 231 worth $300. Rounding out the top 4 was Sun Kim, Flushing, NY with a 230 worth $250.

The final shootout was incredibly tight throughout the entire match. Jose held onto a slim lead in the 7th frame but opened in the next two frames. Andrew, who had 3 open frames in his first 5, threw a 4 timer from the 7th to the 10th frames but fell just short. Sun also could have won the title but he opened in the 7th and 10th frames to fall short. Sal won the title despite the fact he opened in the final frame which was his first open of the shootout.  

The AMF E. Meadow tournament drew a nice crowd of 99 entries, advanced 19 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $3,850. The tournament pattern was “Alcatraz” (38 feet) resulting in moderate cut scores: 693 at 1pm and 701 at 3:30pm. High series of the tournament was shot by Andrew Mienkiewicz with a 797 in the first squad. The wildcard winner was Gregory Welch, Brooklyn NY with a 1393. The high handicap series without bonus pins pot winners were Hector Diaz Jr., Bronx, NY with a 671 at 1pm and Joe LaBargo, Bayside, NY with a 672 at 3:30pm. Both winners were added to the finals.

LIGBT’s next tournament is our monthly house shot tournament being held at Levittown Lanes on Sunday, January 22nd. Top prizes are guaranteed to pay $1,000-1st, $500-2nd, $300-3rd, & $250-4th. DEREK BRANDI WINS NEW YEAR’S DAY MARATHON

Garden City, NY:  Derek Brandi, Whitestone, NY won the $1,000 top prize in LIGBT’s 5 Game Handicap Marathon held on New Year’s Day at AMF Garden City. Derek was the leading qualifier with a 1253 handicap series and threw a 226 in the final shootout to claim the title. Finishing second was Osaze Morris, Rahway, NJ with a 218 earning $500. Rounding out the top 4 was third place finisher Fred Jankowsky, Staten Island, NY with a 205 worth $350 and fourth place went to Monique Compton, Bronx, NY with a 193 earning her $250.

The scratch shootout champion was Joe Scianna, Oakdale, NY, who qualified third with a 1077 series and won the title by shooting a 231 in the shootout worth $350. Finishing 2nd in the scratch event was John Rizzi, Bayshore, NY with a 214 worth $225. Rounding out the top 4 were Alex Henry, Sayville, NY with a 184 worth $175 and fourth went to Shoghi Lawsin, Astoria, NY with a 161. Shoghi was the leading qualifier with an 1111 5-game block. 

Both shootouts came down to the last frame to determine a champion. In the handicap shootout Fred Jankowsky needed a triple in the 10th to tie Derek but he threw a 9 count to end his title hopes. John Rizzi needed a double in the final frame to win the scratch event but a solid 10 pin cost him the title.

The AMF Garden City New Year’s Day marathon drew an incredible crowd of 136 entries (112 handicap/24 scratch) and paid out $9,470. The tournament pattern was “Broadway” (37 feet) resulting in a handicap cashing score of 1152 and a final shootout cut score of 1222. The scratch cashing score was 986 and the cut to make the shootout was 1062.

LIGBT’s next marathon will be Super Bowl Sunday (February 5th) at AMF Plainview. LIGBT’s next sport shot event is on Sunday, January 8th at AMF E. Meadow.
