FREE BowlersMAP at Bowl Long Island

Posted On: January 29, 2009

There will be 48 five minute slots available for videotaping. The first 48 members to register on-site for the Bowl Long Island event and want to be videotaped will be invited to take the free video lesson. Tournament check-in will begin at 9:45am with BowlersMAP sessions starting at 10am. There will be two BowlersMAP stations that will run for two hours. At noon the stations will be closed so the lanes can be re-oiled for the tournament.

The free practice session, normally 1 hour, will be expanded to 2-1/2 hours; 10am through 12:30pm. Columbia 300 will be at the practice session running a Demo Day for their just released Power Swing high-performance ball.

There will be 3 Silver Level Coaches on-site running BowlersMAP. Two of the coaches will be doing the videotaping; Frank Moran and Nick Attardi. Once the 5-minute snapshot of your game is completed you will take the video to be analyzed to Tom Laskow, former IBPSIA President, current IBPSIA Board Member, and Silver Level Coach.

The Bowl Long Island event has the potential to be the first LIGBT event to fill up. Bowl Long Island has 40 brand new lanes and scoring thus limiting the field. Every LIGBT event has had more entries than the previous one. At our last event at AMF Babylon Lanes we had 113 entries. The maximum at Bowl Long Island will be around 128 bowlers.

We look forward to seeing you on Sunday, February 15th at Bowl Long Island. If you have any questions please feel free to call the tournament office and speak with Linda; 1.877.900.6464.

January 18, 2009

Babylon, NY: The Long Island Generations Bowling Tour (LIGBT) traveled to AMF Babylon Lanes for its fourth event of the year. A total of 113 bowlers braved up to 3 inches of snow to compete for over $10,000 in prizes. The winner of the scratch event was senior bowler John Frank of Baldwin, NY earning $1,000 and the 205 & under champion was Preston Cheeks of Brooklyn winning $400.

The scratch event, which had 70 bowlers, was total dominated by John Frank from start to finish. John, who was bowling in the senior division was the leading qualifier with a 1229 5-game series. John averaged closed to 246 on a condition that did not produce high scores. In fact, to make the finals it only took a 201 average.

John received three byes in the finals and only had to bowl 2 matches to win his title. In his first match John defeated Alex Cavagnaro of Lindenhurst (1,107 series) 230 to 201. In the championship match John defeated Chun Bae of Cedarhurst (1,112 series) 259 to 216. While John earned $1,000 for his title Chun took home a respectable $600 for his runner-up finish.

The 205 and under tournament began with 43 entries. The 3 game qualifying leader was James Montuori of Bayshore shooting a 593 scratch series and a 701 with handicap and bonus pins. The eventual champion, Preston Cheeks, road to his title began with a 556 scratch series (637 total) placing him 7th after qualifying.

Preston had to win 4 consecutive matches to earn his first place finish. In match one Preston defeated Jim Walsh (Glen Cove, NY) 179-164. In match 2 Preston defeated the 2nd high qualifier, Valerie Amirtano (Huntington St., NY) 214-197. In the semi-finals Preston had his closest match defeating the top qualifier James Montuori 189-183. The title match was against bowling tournament veteran Redy Bujaoan (Massapequa, NY), who despite being exhausted, bowled a respectable 209 to Preston’s fine 237 game. Preston earned $400 for his days work while Redy took home $250 for his second place finish.

After only four events the LIGBT now boasts over 200 members. Every event has seen an increase in entries and prize money. The next LIGBT event will be held at Bowl Long Island (formerly Patchogue 40 Lanes) on Sunday, February 15th. All LIGBT events begin with a free 1 hour practice session at 11:30am. Bob Brust Jr. & “Big” Sid Downing are LIGBT Champions

Posted On: January 19, 2009

Syosset, NY: The Long Island Generations Bowling Tour (LIGBT) traveled to North Levittown Lanes for its third event of the year. A total of 94 bowlers, largest ever for the Tour, competed for over $9,000 in prizes. The winner of the scratch event was Bob Brust, pro shop owner at South Levittown Lanes, earning $1,000 and the 205 & under champion was “Big” Sid Downing, of Brooklyn winning $350.

Bob’s road to his title began with an 1177 qualifying series (235 average) that positioned him 6th after his 5 games. Leading qualifier was Brian Soto of Kew Gardens who shot a fine 1262 series  (252 average) which earned him 2 byes. High senior qualifier also earning two byes, was Bruce Nielsen of Levittown rolling an 1164 series (233 average.)

In Round 1 of the finals Bob defeated Super Senior Steve Sckalor (1120) of Massapequa 215-213. Bob won his second round match by defeating Darren Barlow of Levittown (1167) 237-214. In the semi-finals Bob continued his winning ways be beating the highest senior qualifier, Bruce Nielsen 239-214.

Those who know Bob Brust well know he always has to make a statement and in the final shootout he did just that by shooting an almost perfect 299 game. A 10-pin cost Bob his perfection but he was happy to “settle” for the $1,000 top prize. The other shootout finalists were second place finisher Brian Ziesig of Levittown (1227) earning $650 and Brian Soto, the top qualifier winning $400.

The 205 & under event attracted 33 entries and after the 3-games of qualifying the leader was Drew Amitrano (162 average) of Huntington Station who rolled a 596 scratch series (719 with handicap and bonus pins). Drew earned 2-byes in the finals while the second high qualifier, Angelo DeSena of Brooklyn earned 1-bye with his 705 (with handicap and bonus pins) qualifying series

Quietly sitting in 6th place after qualifying was Sidney Downing a 200 average bowler from Brooklyn. Sid rolled scratch games of 213-211-204 and with his 12 pin handicap had a total of 640. To win the 205 & under title Sid had to win 3 matches. In Round 1 Sid defeated Mike Scarangella (657) of Shirley 214-131. In Round 2 Sid’s victory came against the second high qualifier Angelo DeSena (705) 206-187.

Sid’s final challenge to win the 205 & under title was in the 3-person Shootout. He had to bowl against the top qualifier Drew Armitrano and Preston Cheeks (656) of Brooklyn. Sid took no prisoners as he defeated both of his opponents by rolling a 208 game (204 scratch). Sid’s victory earned him $350 plus a beautiful trophy. Finishing in second and earning $200 was Preston Cheeks with a 197 game (170 scratch) and the third place finisher was Drew 187 total (149 scratch) who earned $150.

The next LIGBT event will be held at AMF Babylon Bowl on Sunday, January 18th. This event will feature a very special presentation by Ebonite Corporation who will be introducing all four of their brands latest high-end bowling balls.
