Garden City, NY: The LIGBT ran Sport Shot Series #11 at AMF Garden City on Sunday featuring the “Beaten Path” pattern. Shawn Cummings, Middle Village, NY won his first LIGBT title, and the $1,000 top prize, by defeating Andrew Mienkiewicz, Dix Hills, NY 238-222. Andrew, who earned a bye as the noon squad leader, earned $550 for 2nd place. Finishing 3rd was Glenn Buchanan, New York, NY with a 214 worth $325. Rounding out the top 4 was Nas Freeman, Cambria Heights, NY with a 188 worth $250.
The final shootout was a very tight contest throughout the ten frames. Shawn took an early lead with a triple. Andrew rebounded after 2 early opens with a 4 timer and went to the 10th frame needing a double to win his 10th title. Andrew threw the first strike but missed the head pin on his double attempt and finished 2nd. Glenn bowled well, and had a chance to win in the 10th, but his 4th open dropped him to third place. Nas couldn’t find a good line to the pocket and had 3 splits and didn’t strike until the 10th frame.
The final sport shot event of the season offered a “bonus” prize fund to all bowlers competing in 6 or more sport shot series events. A total of 43 bowlers qualified for the bonus with Dan May, Amityville, NY winning the $1,000 top prize with a 715 series. Finishing in 2nd was Rich Hengel, E. Meadow, NY with a 689 worth $500. Rounding out the top 3 was Andrew Mienkiewicz with a 686 worth $250. A total of 10 bowlers cashed in the $2,585 extra prize fund.
The LIGBT 2-squad sport shot tournament drew a great crowd of 119 entries, paid out $5,780 in prize money, and had 31 bowlers go to the cashing window. The side action awarded an additional $3,780 bringing the total event payout to $9,560.
Scores to cash on the “Beaten Path” pattern was 663 at noon and 648 at 2pm. The wildcard winner was Nas Freeman with a 1,307 six-game series. High series of the day was shot by Rich Hengel with a 722 series in the 2pm squad. One woman and one super senior (65+) were added to the finals; Stephanie Pidala, Maspeth, NY shot a 647 and was the top female. Devon Johnson, Brooklyn, NY shot 675 and advanced to meet the 1 in 8 super senior guarantee.
