East Meadow, NY: The LIGBT ran its annual Labor Day Weekend Major at AMF E. Meadow and crowned a first-time champion. Arvin Ong, Rockville Centre, NY defeated Joe Scianna, Long Island, NY 268-249 to win his first title and the $2,000 top prize. Joe actually made the shootout in 2 divisions; 50 & over handicap and scratch. His 2nd place finish was with his handicap score earning him $1,200. Finishing in 3rd place with a 233 was Ferrill McNeil, Bronx, NY who came through the senior handicap division and earned $850. Rounding out the top 5 was 4th place finisher Joe Scianna from the scratch division with a 227 worth $600 and 5th place finisher Joe LaBargo, Bayside, NY with a 214 earning $500.
The final shootout was a close contest and wasn’t decided until the final frame. Arvin got the most handicap and never gave up the lead as he shot a clean game with 2 doubles. Joe also shot a clean game and had a 4 timer but couldn’t string strikes late and settled for 2nd and 4th place. Ferrill also shot a clean game but didn’t get his first strike until the 6th frame and had fell too far behind to catch Arvin. Joe LaBargo, who started with a double, had the only 2 opens in the shootout and settled for a 5th place finish.
The LIGBT Modified House Shot Major drew 255 entries and paid out a $14,490 prize fund to 72 cashers. The side action awarded an additional $7,270 bringing the total event payout to $21,760. Scores to cash on the “Lithium” pattern varied by division. The scratch cuts ranged from 594-779. The 49 & under handicap cuts ranged from 692 to 854. The 50 & over handicap cuts were 682-812. High series of the tournament was shot by Andre McDuffie, Floral Park, NY with an 854.
A separate free bonus tournament was run for bowlers that competed in 6 or more house shot events this season. Rob Miller, Manorville, NY shot a 774 to earn the $1,000 top prize. Finishing in 2nd place was Nick Falsetta, N. Babylon, NY with a 762 worth $500. Rounding out the top 3 was Guy Sereno, Hempstead, NY with a 759 worth $250. It took a 726 to cash in the 10-person $2,585 prize list.
