Frank Calca - Scratch Champion

March 14, 2010

Queens, NY:  The LIGBT, sponsored by Columbia 300, ran its 10th event of the season at Cozy Bowl in Queens. Two first time champions were crowned; Frank Calca, Elmont NY won $1,000 as the scratch champion and Glenn Magsombol, Woodside, NY won the handicap title and its $500 top prize. Over 100 bowlers packed the upstairs 32 lanes at Cozy.

Scoring at Cozy was challenging as it took under a 200 average to make the finals in the scratch event. Frank Calca, a young left hander from Queens, lead from start to finish. He was the qualifying leader with a 904 4-game series (226 average) and dominated the shootout with a 254 game. Franks closest competitor in qualifying was 52 pins away and in the final shootout he won by 44 pins.

The Scratch Shootout was a nice mix of talent. There were two lefties and two righties. There was also a great range of age from a young 18 year old to as high as a 69 year old—a true “generational” finals. At the end the young prevailed with Frank (246) taking the title and Steve Chiarella, Staten Island, NY, finishing second with a 202 game ($500.) Rounding out the top 4 was John Knieriemen, Islip Terrace, NY who shot a 176 and took home $400 and Tom Torrisi, Glendale, NY, our top senior finisher, who struggled but earned $300 for fourth place.

The 210 and under handicap event had another great turnout of 59 bowlers with the top 15 advancing to the finals. It only took a 599 series, including handicap and bonus pins to advance. All finalists were guaranteed a minimum of $100, $40 more than the $60 entry fee.

Glenn Magsombol, a 190 average bowler from Woodside, Queens, won his first LIGBT title in dominating fashion. Although Glen finished third in qualifying, with a 654 series, he saved his best games for the finals. In round one Glenn shot a 260 handicap game and in the shootout he rolled a 255. Glen earned $500 and the trophy for his fine performance. Rounding out the handicap shootout was second place finisher Carmine Bellamore, Seaford, NY 217 ($300), third went to a former LIGBT Champion, Cary Fishman of Manhattan 202 ($200) and fourth was occupied by Donald Eubanks, Elmsford, NY who rolled a 193 and earned $175.

The LIGBT will be at AMF Sayville on Sunday, March 21st and has scheduled two April events; April 11th at AMF East Meadow and April 25th at AMF Commack.
