Levittown, NY:  Hector Diaz Jr., a 39 year old IT Director from the Bronx, NY won the $5,000 top prize at Levittown Lanes where LIGBT’s Super Tournament #4 was held. Hector defeated Hilton Nunoz, New York, NY 253-214 to win his third LIGBT title. Hilton earned $2,500 for his runner-up position. Finishing in third was Scott Kampf, Levittown, NY with a 211 worth $1,500. Fourth place went to Maniram Basdeo, Bronx NY with a 209 worth $1,250. Rounding out the top 5 was 5^th place finisher William Tudy, Brooklyn, NY with a 183 worth $1,000.

The Super Tournament final shootout was a pressure packed match with over $11,000 up for grabs. The match started out slow as everyone had at least one open by the 4^th frame and Scott threw the only double. Hector started his championship run with 4 strikes in a row in the middle of the game and never looked back. By the 8^th frame the competition was for second place with Hilton hanging on to the runner-up position.

Hector joins a prestigious list of $5,000 Super Tournament champions; Tommy Grunwald, Astoria, NY was the first Super champion at Farmingdale Lanes (February, 2016), Cynthia Cooke, Patchogue, NY won the second Super at AMF Plainview (May 2017) and Pak Wong, New York, NY won the 3^rd Super also at AMF Plainview (August, 2017.) The 5^th Super Champion will be crowned later this summer.

The Super Tournament drew an amazing crowd of 394 entries plus 53 desperado entries. There were 71 finalists (better than 1 out of 3 entrants) who shared in a $23,680 prize fund. Cut scores on the custom pattern ranged from 673-733. High series was shot by Gary Paulsen, Massapequa, NY with an 811 in the Sunday 2pm squad. Twenty-one Brunswick Kingpin Max balls were won in the high game pots, and another $24,000 was paid out in side action. Total payout for the weekend exceeded $50,000!

W. Babylon, NY:  Hwanchul Park, a 44 year old marketing director from Fresh Meadows, NY, won his first LIGBT title by defeating Darryl Freeman, Forest Hills, NY, 285-260 at AMF Babylon. Hwanchul earned $1,000 for his victory while Darryl earned $500. Rounding out the top 4 was third place finisher George Williams, Briarwood, NY with a 251 worth $300, and fourth was James Russo, Bronx, NY with a 221 worth $250.

The final 4 shootout got off to a hot start as 3 out of the 4 bowlers had doubles by the third frame. Hwanchul took control of the match by throwing 7 strikes in his first 8 frames. James Russo couldn’t knock down a 10 pin and had to settle for fourth place. Darryl bowled well but a missed one pin spare in the 4^th frame hurt his title aspirations. George, who was getting the most handicap, couldn’t strike late and settled for third place.   

The AMF Babylon event drew a great crowd of 150 entries (plus 24 desperados), advanced 29 bowlers to the finals and paid out $5,410. The house shot pattern created senior cut scores of; 735, 737, & 720 and 49 & under cut scores of 730, 761, & 730. High series of the tournament was shot by George Williams with an 880 in the first squad. The wildcard winner was Sal Florindo, Forest Hills, NY with a 1444 six game series. The winners of the Brunswick Kingpin Max ball raffles were; Dave Soren, Darryl Freeman, and Mack Oakman Jr.

Garden City, NY:  Joe Kingston, a 30 year old electrician from Ronkonkoma, NY won the $1,000 top prize at LIGBT’s sport shot event hosted at AMF Garden City. Joe earned his third LIGBT title by defeating 2 bowlers who tied for second; Dianna Slaughter, Hempstead, NY and Pak Wong, New York, NY 238-218 in the final match.  While Dianna and Pak each earned $450,  fourth place was taken by John Sandano, Brooklyn, NY with a 187 earning him $300.

Scoring was low all day due to the tough “Autobahn” pattern. The key in the final shootout was to stay clean. Even though Joe was giving everyone handicap, as much as 49 pins, he was the only bowler not to have an open frame. Both Dianna and Pak could have won the title if they doubled in the 10^th forcing Joe to mark. But when Joe came up in the final frame all he needed was a 9 count on his first ball to secure the title. 

The AMF Garden City event drew a nice crowd of 101 entries, advanced 18 bowlers to the finals and paid out $4,200. The cut scores on the “Autobahn” pattern were low; 701 & 704 for the lower average division and 657 & 695 for the higher average division. High series of the tournament was shot by Curtis Hetmeyer, Brooklyn, NY with a 782 in the 3pm squad. The wildcard bonuses were won by Pak Wong with a 1385 from the lower average division and Jason Nicholas, Wantagh, NY, from the higher average division with a 1302.

Wantagh, NY:  Gary Paulsen, a semi-retired senior bowler from Massapequa, NY, won the $1,000 top prize at LIGBT’s inaugural 4-game sweeper at AMF Wantagh. Gary’s third LIGBT title was accomplished when he defeated Scott Kampf, Levittown, NY 252-235 in the final shootout. While Scott earned $500 for second, Henry Van Engel, Bayside, NY took third with a 185 earning $300. Rounding out the top 4 was Joe LaBargo, Bayside, NY, with a 183 worth $250.

The final 4 shootout was really a 2 man race by the squad leaders Gary (senior division) and Scott (49 & under division). Gary was dealing with a very painful pulled back muscle which caused him to bowl very tentatively. This may have helped him as he had the least open frames, despite having the lowest average in the shootout, than the other finalists. The match came down to the last frame where if Gary marked he would close out Scott. Gary easily converted a one pin spare to secure the match and his third title.

The AMF Wantagh event drew a Friday night crowd of 48 entries, advanced 8 bowlers to the finals and paid out $2,490. The cut scores on the house shot were 956 for the 49 & under group and 1002 for the senior division. High series of the tournament was shot by Scott Kampf with a 1067.

E. Meadow, NY:  William “OG” Tudy, a 65 year old right-hander from Brooklyn, NY, won the $1,000 top prize at LIGBT’s sport shot event at AMF E. Meadow. William’s first LIGBT title became a reality when he defeated Jack Chan, New York, NY 206-202 in one of the lowest scoring shootouts in LIGBT history. While Jack earned $500 for second, William Knoth, Patchogue, NY finished third with a 196 worth $300 and fourth went to Tony Jimenez, W. Babylon, NY with a 178 earning him $250.

The final shootout was a “survival of the fittest.” By the 4^th frame everyone already had 2 open frames. With the historic low scoring all 4 bowlers were within 20 pins of each other going into the last 2 frames. William Tudy finished first with a strike and 9 to force Jack to knock down 17 pins to win. Jack made his spare but shockingly threw a 3 count on his fill ball to lose the match. William Knoth also had a shot at the title if he doubled but threw 9 to settle for 3^rd place.

The AMF E. Meadow event drew a crowd of 71 entries, advanced 14 bowlers to the finals and paid out $3,250. The cut scores on the “Turnpike” pattern were low; 743 & 684 for the lower average division and 651 & 639 for the higher average division. High series of the tournament was shot by William Knoth with a 774 in the 1pm squad. The wildcard bonuses were won by Sal Florindo, Forest Hills, NY with a 1281 from the lower average division and Darcy Monroe, E. Meadow, NY, from the higher average division with a 1376.

New Hyde Park, NY:  Harry Park, a 46 year old right-hander from Bay Terrace, NY, won the $2,000 top prize at LIGBT’s Spring Major #2 at Herrill Lanes. Harry won his first LIGBT title by defeating Kameron Smith, Tobyhanna, PA 280-275 in the final shootout. Kameron earned $1,000 for second place. Rounding out the top 6 was third place finisher Vinny Nguyen, Flushing, NY with a 265 earning $600, fourth place was Tony Dilluvio, Flushing, NY with a 236 worth $400, fifth went to David Ruiz, Whitestone, NY with a 208 earning $350, and sixth went to Jackie Delawski, Williston Park, NY with a 204 worth $300.  

The final shootout went down to the last frame with 3 bowlers having a chance to win the title. Vinny, who was on a strike in the 9^th, needed a double in the 10^th frame to take the lead. He threw the first strike but got only 7 on his second shot. Kameron had the lead going into the final frame and spared to force Harry to double to win the title. Harry, who struck in the 9^th frame, threw two perfect shots in the 10^th to grab his first title and the $2,000 top prize.

The Herrill Lanes event drew a great crowd of 254 entries, advanced 42 bowlers to the finals and paid out $9,810. The cut scores on the “Broadway” pattern ranged from 710 to 756 for the lower average division and 723 to 745 in the higher average division. High series of the tournament was shot by Anthony Fusco, W. Hempstead, NY with an 831 in the Sunday, 1pm squad. There were 4 wildcard winners: The Friday night wildcard winners were Jae Yi, Flushing, NY 1376 & Sun Kim, Flushing, NY 1406. The Sunday wildcard winners were Brendan Delaney, Levittown, NY with a 1435 and Calvin Nottingham, Deer Park, NY with a 1434.

Astoria, NY:  Max Macias, a 32 year old cable technician from Clifton, NJ, won his first LIGBT title by defeating Mike Karr, Brooklyn, NY, 275-263 at Astoria Bowl. Max earned $1,000 for his victory while Mike earned $550 for second. Rounding out the top 6 was third place finisher Jack Chan, New York, NY with a 239 worth $400, fourth went to Josh Hernandez, Woodside, NY with a 228 worth $300, fifth was taken by Damian Walsh, Mastic, NY with a 227 worth $275 and sixth went to Pak Wong, New York, NY with a 197 earning him $250.

The 6 person shootout was well bowled but by the end it was a 2 person competition between Max and Mike. Both bowlers were the only 2 competitors to throw a clean game in the shootout. Mike bowled the better game but could never overcome the 51 pin handicap advantage Max started with. While Mike threw a 5-timer his last 5 frames Max kept filling frames to earn his first title.   

The Astoria event drew a record house shot tournament crowd of 142 entries (including 15 new members), and paid out $6,075 to 35 different bowlers. The house shot pattern created senior cut scores of; 746 & 743 and 49 & under cut scores of 778 & 769. High series of the tournament was shot by Pak Wong with an 871 in the first squad. Juan Ramos was the winner of the bowling ball raffle and took home a Brunswick Kingpin.

Garden City, NY:  Eddie Cintron, a 60 year old Technical Project Manager from Laurelton, NY, won the $2,000 top prize at LIGBT’s Spring Major at AMF Garden City. Eddie won his first LIGBT title by defeating Max Thomas, Stamford, CT 272-249 in the final shootout. Max earned $1,000 for second place. Rounding out the top 5 was third place finisher Ron Hatchett, NYC, with a 231 earning $550, fourth place was Alex Padmore, Jamaica, NY with a 176 worth $450 and fifth went to Dionte Johnson, NYC with a 168 earning $350.

The final shootout was a good one with some fine shot making. Eddie took a commanding lead with a triple in the middle of the game and never looked back. In fact, Eddie and second place finisher Max Thomas were the only 2 bowlers throwing clean games. Max excited the crowd by converting the 2-8-10 split in the 8^th frame. Ron Hatchett bowled well but he never recovered from his second frame missed spare. Alex and Dionte struggled throughout the match and could never from early opens. 

The AMF Garden City event drew a great crowd of 286 entries, advanced 47 bowlers to the finals and paid out $10,330. The cut scores on the “Alcatraz” pattern ranged from 674 to 725. High series of the tournament was shot by Dionte Johnson with an 807 in the Friday, 10pm squad. There were 2 wildcard bonuses: The Friday night wildcard was won by Alex Padmore with a 1377 six-game series and the Sunday wildcard was won by Audrey Rodrigues, Otisville, NY with a 1360. Five entrants won the Kingpin bowling ball raffle; Tony Jimenez, Christian Clemons, Mike Simeone, Peter McDonald, and James Marino.
