New Hyde Park, NY:  Max Thomas, a 55 year old engineer from Stanford, CT, won his first LIGBT title at Herrill Lanes. Max, who was the first squad leader which seeded him directly into the final shootout, defeated Sueng Yoo, New York, NY 260-246 to earn the $1,000 top prize. Sueng, who was also looking for his first LIGBT title, earned $550 for his runner-up position.

The final 5 shootout was shot on the very difficult lane pattern “Stockholm.” The scoring had been very low all day and Max “outsmarted” the pattern by throwing the ball hard and straight. While everyone else struggled with opens Max threw a 9-pin no tap clean game to win the title. Third place in the shootout went to the Labor Day Champion Sun Kim, Flushing, NY with a 218 worth $400. Fourth was taken by Pak Wong, New York, NY with a 189 earning him $300 and fifth went to Dennis Cury, Lynbrook, NY with a 167 worth $250.

The Herrill Lanes tournament drew a great September crowd of 100 entries, advanced 18 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $3,890. WTBA’s “Stockholm” pattern (34 feet) was used resulting in low scoring; the cut was 675 at 1pm and 677 at 3pm. High series of the tournament was shot by our champion Max Thomas with a 758 in the 1pm squad.

Babylon, NY: Sushi chef Sun Kim, from Flushing, NY, took the day off from his restaurant to win the LIGBT Labor Day Major at AMF Babylon. Sun, who was making his first ever LIGBT finals, wowed the big crowd with his straight ball to shoot a 254 handicap game to claim the $2,000 major title. Finishing second, and earning $1,000, was last event’s champion Dwayne Redman, Bronx, NY. Dwayne had a chance to win the title with a double in the tenth frame but left a 7 count on his first ball to finish with a 223.

The final 5 shootout was an exciting and nerve racking match. Dwayne was the only bowler in the shootout to have a title and everyone else was appearing in their first shootout ever! Kim, who was a master of consistency, started the match with 6 marks in a row gaving him a slim lead. Kim opened in the 7^th frame reducing his lead to less than 5 pins. But as a true champion Kim followed his open with a double and spare giving him a great chance to win. When Dwayne failed to double in the tenth the trophy and the $2,000 top prize was Kim’s forever.

Finishing third was the only woman in the shootout, Sheila Lee, Woodhaven, NY. Sheila finished with a 221 worth $750. Fourth place went to James “Iguana” Mora, Bronx, NY with a 193 earning him $600. The final spot in the shootout was taken by Guy Sereno, W. Hempstead, NY with a 192 worth $500. Guy, who has a 199 club average, was spotting the other 4 shootout bowlers at least 30 pins each as he owns one of the highest averages in the LIGBT.

The AMF Babylon tournament drew a 2-day Labor Day Weekend crowd of 235 entries, advanced 43 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $10,280 plus 12 Brunswick balls. Kegel’s 41 foot “Turnpike” pattern was used and cut scores ranged from 701 to 714. The high series of the tournament was shot by Julian Valdaro, Bay Shore, NY with a 797 series in the Sunday 3pm squad.

The LIGBT begins its eighth season on Sunday, September 27^th at Herrill Lanes. Top prizes are guaranteed to pay $1,000 & $500. Farmingdale, NY:  Dwayne “Red” Redman, Bronx, NY, a right-handed toll collector from the Bronx, NY won his first LIGBT title at Farmingdale Lanes by a mere 1 pin. “Red” defeated second place finisher Maniram Basdeo, a taxi driver also from the Bronx, who was appearing in his 4^th consecutive shootout finals, 228-227. Dwayne earned $1,000 and the LIGBT trophy while Maniram earned $500 for his runner-up position.

The 5-person shootout was a very exciting competition. Only 21 pins separated the 5 bowlers when the match was finished. Third place went to Julio Arnold, Woodside, NY with a 220 worth $300. Fourth went to Pak Wong, New York, NY with a 214 earning him $275. The final spot in the shootout was taken by Dwight Dunkley, Brooklyn, NY with a 207 worth $250. A huge and boisterous crowd watched the finals and enjoyed the exciting finish.  

The Farmingdale Lanes tournament drew a great Friday night summer crowd of 106 entries, advanced 18 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $3,870. Kegel’s new “Alcatraz” pattern (38 feet) was used resulting in moderate scoring; the cut was 706 in the 7pm squad and 696 in the 9pm squad. High series of the tournament, 775, was shot by Steve Baum, Commack, NY in the 9pm squad. Brunswick gave away the Radical Guru Mighty to both squad leaders; Steve Chiu, Little Neck, NY (742) and Steve Baum (775).

  E. Meadow GM, Xavier with Leslie Farrell

E. Meadow, NY:  Leslie Farrell, a 34 year old nurse from Flushing, NY, won her first LIGBT title at AMF East Meadow with a gutty performance. Leslie won the $1,000 top prize with a 238 handicap game which was 37 pins more than second place finisher Maniram Basdeo, Bronx, NY who earned $500 with a 201. Third went to Ron Hatchett, New York, NY with a 195 worth $350. Fourth was taken by Sueng Yoo, New York, NY with a 194 worth $300 and fifth was taken by Erik McIntyre, Farmingdale, NY with a 171 earning him $250.

In one of the lowest scoring final shootouts in LIGBT history Leslie grinded out her victory by having only two open frames and a strong finish. There were a total of 20 open frames in the 5 person shootout with only one double and that was by Leslie in her 8^th and 9^th frames. The title was not determined until Leslie took control of the match with her late game double.  

The AMF East Meadow tournament drew a great summer crowd of 108 entries, advanced 19 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $3,970. Kegel’s “Highway to Hell” pattern (40 feet) was used resulting in moderate scoring; the cut was 705 in the 1pm squad and 686 in the 3pm squad. High series of the tournament was shot by second place finisher Maniram Basdeo with a 758 in the 1pm squad.

Plainview, NY:  Joe Kingston, a 28 year old electrician from Ronkonkoma, NY, won his second LIGBT title in the past month with a victory at AMF Plainview. Joe shot a 247 handicap game to defeat second place finisher Seung Yoo, New York, NY by 26 pins. Seung, who shot a 221 earned $500 while Joe claimed the $1,000 top prize. Finishing third with a 218, and earning $250, was Maniram Basdeo, Bronx, NY and fourth went to Eddie Eng, Flushing, NY with a 198 worth $200.   

Joe needed a fast start in the final shootout since he was giving the other 3 competitors handicap. Despite the very difficult lane pattern Joe began the match with 5 strikes in a row. Even with Joe’s amazing first 5 frames Seung could have won the tournament with a double in the final frame but settled for second when he left a 6 pin on his first shot. All 4 finalists had at least 2 opens in the final shootout.

The AMF Plainview tournament drew a Friday night summer crowd of 75 entries, advanced 14 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $2,915. WTBA’s “Biejing” pattern (35 feet) was used resulting in low scoring; the cut was 665 in the 7pm squad and 707 in the 9pm squad. High series of the tournament was shot by Dave Soren with a 732 in the 7pm squad. Brunswick gave away the Radical Guru Mighty to both squad leaders; Dave Soren, Long Beach, NY and Ray Perry, Farmingdale, NY.

Levittown, NY:  Bev Parker, a telecom specialist from New York City, defeated 4 other shootout finalists at South Levittown Lanes to win her first LIGBT title and the $1,000 top prize. Bev shot a 239 giving her a five pin victory over second place finisher Maniram Basedo, Bronx, NY who shot a 234 to earn $500. Third place went to Shui Lee, Forest Hills, NY with a 217 worth $300. The fourth spot was taken by Kenny Wright, Brooklyn, NY with a 189 worth $250 and fifth went to Rob Foerster, E. Meadow, NY with a 177 earning him $200.

The final 5 shootout was extremely competitive with the winner not determined until the final frame. Beverly was getting the most handicap so she had an early lead despite opening twice in the first 5 frames. Maniram spared in his first 7 frames, and after an open, doubled in the 9^th and 10th to force Bev to fill 20 pins in her final frame. Bev threw a perfect strike on her first ball and then spared to claim her title.

The South Levittown tournament drew a nice summer crowd of 97 entries, advanced 17 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $3,570. Kegel’s “Sphinx” pattern (40 feet) was used resulting in moderate scoring; the cut was 732 in the 1pm squad and 709 in the 3pm squad. High series of the tournament was shot by the 2^nd place finisher Maniram Basdeo with an 815 in the 1pm squad.

East Meadow, NY:  Brendan Delaney, a 24 year old left-hander from Levittown, NY, won his first LIGBT title with an easy victory at AMF East Meadow. Brendan shot a 255 handicap game to earn the $1,000 top prize. Brendan’s shot the only clean game in the final match which gave him an unbelievable 52 pin victory.

Brendan’s victory was surprisingly easy as the 3 other competitors had at least 2 opens in the first 5 frames while Brendan threw a triple in frames 3 through 5. All Brendan had to do to earn his first title was to stay clean the rest of the way. Finishing second was Jetta Bonds, Brooklyn, NY, with a 203 worth $500. There was a tie for third and fourth with a 198, worth $275 each, shot by Steven Williams, Bellerose, NY and Ryan Earley, Westbury, NY. 

The AMF East Meadow tournament drew a nice summer crowd of 89 entries, advanced 16 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $3,210. Kegel’s “Autobahn” pattern (42 feet) was used resulting in moderate scoring; the cut was 710 in the 7pm squad and 701 in the 9pm squad. High series of the tournament was shot by Andrew Mienkiewicz, with an 802 in the 9pm squad. Both Andrew and Jae Yi of Flushing, NY (769 at 7pm) won Brunswick balls for being the squad leader in their respective squads.

Wantagh, NY:  Joe Kingston, a 28 year old electrician from Ronkonkoma, NY, shot a 226 handicap game to claim a five pin victory worth $1,000 at LIGBT’s event at AMF Wantagh. Joe, who has been an LIGBT member for over 2 years, defeated four other shootout competitors to win his first LIGBT title. Joe’s victory was worth $1,000 plus a beautiful trophy.

The final shootout was extremely competitive as 5 bowlers took the lanes to compete for $2,250. Joe started the match with 2 opens in his first 5 frames but took the lead when he threw 4 strikes in a row beginning in frame 6. The early leader was second place finisher Scott Kampf, a 15 year old student from Levittown, NY. Scott, who has one of the highest averages in the LIGBT, earned $500 with a 221. Scott could have won his third title with a double in the tenth but he rolled a 7 count on his first shot in the final frame.

The battle for the last 3 spots in the shootout was extremely close. Finishing third with a 202 and earning $300 was Dave Perrone who resides in West Babylon, NY. Fourth went to Terry Cooper, Brooklyn, NY with a 201 worth $275. The final spot in the shootout went to Mike Simeone, Wantagh, NY with a 193 worth $250.    

The AMF Wantagh tournament drew a great summer crowd of 109 entries, advanced 19 bowlers to the finals, and paid out $4,035. Kegel’s “Abbey Road” pattern (40 feet) was used resulting in moderate scoring; the cut was 699 in the 1pm squad and 713 in the 3pm squad. High series of the tournament was shot by the 5^th place finisher Mike Simeone with a 780 in the 3pm squad.
