Adam Chase and Pete Smith Win at AMF Commack

Posted On: February 13, 2011

Adam Chase Commack Scratch Champion

February, 13 2011

Commack, NY:  The LIGBT visited AMF Commack and 103 bowlers packed the center for this one squad tournament. Emerging victorious in the scratch tournament was Adam Chase, of Seaford, NY and the handicap winner was Pete Smith, Commack, NY. A total of 24 bowlers cashed for the day which means better than 1 in 5 bowlers earned money.

Despite the fact the lanes were hooking good scoring took place. Leading the scratch event after the 4 games of qualifying was Brian Ziesig, Levittown, NY with a 975. Brian was coming off a recent victory at AMF Babylon and was looking for his second title in a row. The top senior was Perry Liberta, Dix Hills, NY who shot an 801 series.

The final shootout was a good match between Adam and Brian. After 5 frames Adam held a 10 pin lead but going into the tenth Brian could have won the title with three strikes. The first two shots were perfect but to everyone’s surprise, including Adams, Brian went high and left 4 pins standing. The final score was Adam 236 ($1,000) and Brian 233 ($500). Finishing third was John Katsaros, Bartonsville, PA who shot a 185 and earned $350.

The handicap qualifying had some great bowling. Pete Smith rolled a 733 scratch (784 handicap) to earn the top spot and a seed into the final match. The top 17 series advanced to the finals and the cut number was 711. In the finals there were 7 previous LIGBT champions.

The handicap shootout was a competition between 3 good players. Pete Smith, who recently moved from the scratch events, was making his first appearance in the final shootout as was Sean Teahan, Islip, NY. The third bowler was Chris Jove, Port Jefferson, NY who seems to always be in the final shootout. This time the finals experience didn’t matter as Pete and Sean finished first and second. Pete shot a 227 (213 scratch) to win his first title and the $500 top prize. Sean rolled a 196 (160 scratch) to earn $300 while Chris struggled with a 173 (146 scratch) to win $250.

The LIGBT’s next event is Sunday, February 27th and it’s a 2-squad handicap event at South Levittown. For more information on future LIGBT tournaments and complete results of the AMF Commack event please visit www.ligbtour.com or call the tournament office at 1.877.900.6464.

BRIAN ZIESIG & DAVID REED LIGBT MAJOR CHAMPIONS

Posted On: January 30, 2011

Brian Zeisig, Champion

January 31, 2011
The LIGBT hosted its second 2-day major event of season 3 and it was a huge success. Over 270 bowlers packed AMF Babylon and when all of the pins had fallen two champions were crowned. The winner of the scratch event was Brian Ziesig and the winner of the handicap event was David Reed. Both earned their third LIGBT titles and $1,000 for their victories.
The PBA Cheetah pattern was used and qualifying scores were moderate. But when it came to the finals the scores went through the roof as the cut for each round was in the 240’s! In the final match there was only one 8 count (and that was a blow out 7-10 split). All the rest of the shots were either a strike or 9. Now that’s good bowling!
One of the reasons the high scoring was the quality of the finalists. Brian Ziesig, Levittown, NY, won the tournament, and its $1,000 top prize, with a 257. Brian needed a mark in the tenth to secure his third LIGBT title this season. Finishing second was left-hander Anthony Pepe of Queens who shot a 237 and earned $600. Third place went to Mitch Sacks ($400), Monroe, NY, with a 215. All three bowled great and could have won the title with some breaks.
The handicap final shootout consisted of 4 bowlers. David Reed, Shoreham, NY won his third LIGBT title and $1,000 by shooting a 231. Finishing second was a new LIGBT member, Keston Glasgow, Brooklyn, NY who earned $550 with a 218. Third place was taken by Doug Garrambone, Port Jefferson Station, NY who earned $450 with a 207. Finishing fourth was former LIGBT champion Alex Ware, Brooklyn, NY. Alex shot a 176 and took home $350.
The LIGBT Babylon major event paid out over $10,000 in prize money to over 50 different bowlers. The next LIGBT event is Sunday, February 13th at AMF Commack. This event tournament will feature one squad with 4-game qualifying for scratch bowlers and 3-game qualifying for handicap. The scratch event was bowled on the PBA’s Chameleon Pattern. Scoring was moderate as Eric Taylor rolled the highest series of the day, 1448 which averages out to a 241 average. To make the cut in the under division you had to average 217 and for the senior division the cut average was only 203.

The final shootout was close most of the way but Eric Taylor always had the lead and never relinquished it. In the end, Eric’s 234 was good enough by 10 pins to earn the $1,000 top prize. Finishing second with a 224, and earning $700, was Ray Edwards, Middle Island, NY. Third place went to top senior bowler Gary Shultis, Levittown, NY who earned $500 with a 214. Ed Eng, Flushing, NY was the 2pm squad leader with a 769. It took a 701 series with handicap to make the finals which guaranteed everyone at least $100.

The handicap final four was dominated by Ken Simpson. Ken started the match with the first 4 out of 5 strikes and never looked back. He finished with a 256 (213 scratch) to defeat second place finisher Ken Savarese, W. Hempstead, NY 217 (163 scratch) by almost 40 pins. January 9, 2011
East Meadow, NY: The LIGBT hosted a 2-squad handicap tournament at AMF East Meadow using the PBA Viper Pattern. The 37 foot pattern was very challenging especially in the first squad when it took a 701, with handicap and bonus pins, to make the finals. The cut score for the 2pm squad was a little higher with everyone shooting 728 or high advancing.
The leader of the first squad, David Henderson, West New York, NY, shot a 756 series (576 scratch) and was seeded directly into the final shootout and guaranteed no less than $300. The final shootout consisted of 3 bowlers looking for their first LIGBT title. Although the 3 finalists were a little shaky to start Ronnie Sandt, Franklin Square, NY took control by rolling four strikes in frames 3 through 6. Despite opens in the seventh and eighth frames Ronnie shot a 255 (205 scratch) to win the $500 top prize and his first LIGBT trophy.
